On November 8th, our college invited Professor Suqin Ge of Virginia Tech to give an academic report entitled "A research on the mechanisms of rice cultivation and modern cooperative behaviour in China" online.Part of the teachers and students attended the lecture presided by Dean Lijian Qin.
Firstly, Professor Suqin Ge introduced the motivation and writing idea of the paper and gave a detailed introduction to the history of rice cultivation in China. Secondly, Professor Suqin Ge empirically tested the effect of rice cultivation on modern cooperative behavior in China through two-stage least squares method and passed a series of robustness tests, and the study found that rice cultivation in China has a significant positive contribution to cooperative behavior. Another time, Prof. Suqin Ge also analyzed the mechanism from the dimensions of cultural transmission, irrigation, and labor exchange. Finally, Professor Suqin Ge concludes that rice cultivation promotes higher frequency of cooperation in lending money, caring for family members, job searching, and housing construction, and that rice cultivation helps to explain to some extent the growing economic gap between the North and South of China.
The academic forum which is informative and insightful broadened the horizons of the students and teachers, providing them with a deeper understanding of the influence mechanism between rice cultivation and modern cooperative behavior in China.
