Abstractusing the data of the Chinese Social Survey in 2017, this paper examines the relationship between the Internet and the household consumption upgrading of rural residents, and specifically analyzes the heterogeneous impact of the Internet on rural residents of different ages and income levels. The results show that: (1) The Internet significantly promotes the upgrading of rural household consumption. (2) With the increase of quantile, the impact of Internet usage on rural residents’ household consumption upgrading presents an inverted U-shaped trend, while the impact of the high quantile is not significant. (3) The role of the Internet in promoting consumption upgrading is relatively more obvious in families of youth groups, high-income families and families in Northeast China. In order to further play the role of the Internet in promoting consumption upgrading, the government should eliminate the digital divide between different regions in China, Implement "information poverty alleviation" with the poor and the elderly as the focus, and promote e-commerce to cover remote and backward areas.
